The Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network ( MPHN ) is currently urging vulnerable seniors to get vaccinated to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses such as influenza , COVID-19 , and respiratory syncytial virus ( RSV ) during the winter season . Respiratory illnesses can lead to severe health complications , especially in older individuals with weakened immune systems . Seniors are at a higher risk due to their age and underlying health conditions , making vaccination crucial in reducing the severity of illnesses and additional complications . Free vaccinations are available for individuals aged 65 and older , with recommendations to get vaccinated at least every year and every 6 months for those over 75.

Influenza and COVID transmission in the community are on the rise , while respiratory syncytial virus remains at high levels . Older adults are particularly susceptible to developing serious complications from RSV , making it important for individuals over 60 who may be at higher risk to consider getting vaccinated . Although the RSV vaccine is not free , individuals can consult with their doctor or pharmacist to learn more about the vaccine and determine if it is recommended for them.

While safety measures introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic are no longer mandatory , it is still important to continue taking precautions to prevent the spread of illness . Practising healthy habits such as regular hand washing , sanitizing , covering coughs and sneezes , and staying home when feeling unwell are essential in reducing the transmission of respiratory illnesses . Many aged care facilities are implementing visitor protocols and encouraging the use of personal protective equipment ( PPE ) like masks to safeguard the health of elderly residents during outbreaks.

The MPHN emphasizes the significance of maintaining preventive measures and vaccination to protect seniors from Respiratory diseases like influenza , COVID-19 , and RSV . It is crucial for older individuals to prioritize their health during the winter season by staying informed about respiratory illness and taking necessary precautions to stay healthy .
