Subsequent to the World Health Organization ( WHO ) declaring Mpox a Public health emergency of international concern , Antigua 's Ministry of Health has announced a multistakeholder approach to increase surveillance at ports of entry and health care facilities in the country . The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre is prepared to conduct diagnostic testing for suspected cases of Mpox . The disease , caused by the monkeypox virus , shares similarities with the smallpox virus and presents with symptoms such as fever , rash , swollen lymph nodes , and muscle pain.
Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh has outlined measures to prevent the entry of the Mpox virus into Trinidad and Tobago . While the country will not ban travellers from Africa , passengers will undergo screening at airports and testing for the virus through the Caribbean Public Health Agency ( Carpha ) . Deyalsingh emphasized the importance of surveillance and testing for early detection of the virus in travelers.
In 2022 , the World Health Organization declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern due to the increasing cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other African countries . Trinidad and Tobago treated four Mpox cases locally , with over 15,600 cases and 537 deaths reported globally . The Mpox strain in 2022 was more transmissible , posing a higher risk.
