-advertisment-

Residents in Chennai have called on the Greater Chennai Corporation ( GCC ) to step up surveillance in areas with high instances of vector - borne illnesses , conduct inspections for mosquito breeding in homes , and raise awareness about prevention methods . This plea comes after Bengaluru reported a spike in fever and flu cases . In Karnataka , many individuals have been visiting doctors exhibiting dengue - like symptoms but testing negative for the disease , according to Chief Health Officer M Jagadeesan.

While there have been no reported outbreaks in Chennai , recent heavy rainfall in Sholinganallur ( 12 cm ) and the Manali area ( 9 cm ) has emphasized the need for increased vigilance , as stated by health officials . The city 's public health department has highlighted July to December as the peak period for vector - borne diseases . The Aedes aegypti mosquito , responsible for spreading dengue , breeds in stagnant water found in various sources such as flower pots , vases , containers , debris , and tarpaulins . It is advised to regularly drain and clean containers that can accumulate water , as even small items like thermocol , mattresses , and plastic cups can serve as breeding sites , the health officer emphasized.

Ramesh Ramadoss , a civic activist in northern Chennai , pointed out that discarded mattresses and boxes in public areas often become breeding grounds for mosquitoes . He expressed hope for a corporation - led initiative to clear such waste from public spaces promptly . In 2023 , during the northeast monsoon , flooding from the Chitrakulam tank caused streets to be inundated , taking days to dry up.

Meanwhile , the corporation is identifying specific zones for targeted door - to - door surveys to identify stagnant water sources . Once the rainy season begins , efforts will be intensified to conduct these surveys . A temephos liquid is used in water storage containers to eliminate larvae before they mature into adult mosquitoes , ensuring effective control measures are in place.
