New Zealand's Vigilance Against Avian Influenza

With the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) confirmed in commercial poultry flocks in Australia, New Zealand's poultry industry is ramping up its biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of the virus. The Poultry Industry Association of New Zealand (PIANZ) has outlined the steps being taken to protect the country from HPAI.

Biosecurity Measures and Coordination

New Zealand and the Pacific Islands are currently the only two countries without a strain of HPAI, but the remote geographic location does not eliminate the risk. PIANZ emphasized the importance of vigilance and coordination in implementing biosecurity measures. The industry is working closely with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), Biosecurity NZ, and Food Safety NZ to ensure a coordinated response in case of an HPAI incursion. PIANZ also urges bird owners to report any symptoms of HPAI to the MPI Exotic Pest and Disease hotline for prompt action. The recent cases of HPAI in Australia serve as a stark reminder of the threat posed by the virus, with multiple serotypes confirmed in 2024, including H7N3, H7N9, and H5N1. The collaboration between industry and government agencies under the 'One Health' response framework is crucial in preparing for and responding to any potential outbreaks of avian influenza.
