Nearsightedness is a global concern, with research predicting that half of the world's population will have myopia by 2050. Dr. Qiaohui Wei White, a pediatric optometrist at the Duke Eye Center, notes a rising number of children with myopia in the Triangle area. Myopia typically manifests between the ages of 6-12, but cases in younger children are becoming more common. Dr. White emphasizes the importance of outdoor play in preventing myopia, recommending at least two hours of outdoor time per day. She explains that excessive near-work, like reading and screen time, can contribute to myopia development. Additionally, following the 20/20 rule, taking breaks every twenty minutes to focus on distant objects, can help relax eye muscles and slow myopia progression. Genetics also play a significant role in myopia risk, underscoring the need for early eye exams for children aged 3-5. Dr. White advises parents to discuss various management options with their doctor, including glasses, eye drops, and specialized contact lenses.
