MBTnnounces Red Line Service Suspensions for Track Work

The MBTA has announced that Red Line service in parts of Cambridge and Boston will be suspended for a week starting Monday as part of the ongoing track improvement program . Train service between Alewife and Kendall / MIT stations was previously suspended in July , and now free shuttle buses will replace trains between JFK / UMass and Kendall / MIT stations from Aug. 19 to Aug. 25.

Impact on Riders

During this period , shuttle buses will not stop at Downtown Crossing or Park Street . Southbound riders can disembark at the Otis and Summer street shuttle stop , while northbound riders can disembark at the Federal and Franklin street stop . Shuttle buses will also make stops at State and Haymarket stations . The MBTA encourages riders to utilize free commuter rail service between Braintree and South Station , as well as between Porter and North Station . Accessible vans are also available for on - demand transportation.

Future Shutdowns

MBTA officials acknowledge the inconvenience these service changes may cause to riders ' daily travels but emphasize their commitment to improving overall service reliability , timeliness , and safety . More Red Line shutdowns are scheduled for September , with train service set to be suspended between JFK / UMass and Braintree from Sept. 6 to Sept. 29 for further track work . Alternative service options are currently being finalized , according to the MBTA.

The work being done is part of the MBTA 's efforts to enhance the Red Line service and ensure a more efficient and reliable commuter experience for passengers . Officials urge riders to stay updated on service changes and alternative transportation options as the track improvement program progresses.

In a statement , the MBTA emphasized their dedication to improving long - term travel experiences for passengers and announced plans for additional track work in the coming months .
