Deadly Listeria Outbreak Strikes U.S.

A deadly outbreak of Listeria has struck the U.S. , leading to two deaths and hospitalizing 28 individuals . The outbreak has been linked to sliced deli meat , causing concern among federal health officials . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) announced that a dozen states in the Midwest and East Coast have reported cases of Listeria , with Illinois and New York being the most affected . In New York alone , there have been seven reported cases of the disease.

The samples collected from infected individuals were taken between May 29 and July 5 . According to the CDC , interviews revealed that 16 out of 18 sick individuals had consumed deli - sliced turkey , liverwurst , and ham from deli counters . The CDC is currently investigating the source of contamination and has stated that there is no evidence linking prepackaged deli meats to the outbreak.

People at higher risk of contracting Listeria are advised to avoid consuming meats sliced at deli counters unless they are heated to 165 degrees Fahrenheit . Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to Listeria , as it can lead to severe complications such as miscarriages . Symptoms of Listeria include fever , fatigue , muscle aches , headaches , stiff neck , confusion , loss of balance , and convulsions.
