MPHN Acting CEO Narelle Mills emphasized the importance of vaccinations in reducing the risk of serious illnesses such as influenza , COVID-19 , and respiratory syncytial virus ( RSV ) during the winter season . According to Mills , respiratory illnesses can lead to severe complications , especially for older individuals with weaker immune systems . As reports of increased influenza and COVID-19 transmission circulate , getting vaccinated becomes crucial in preventing severe illness and complications.

"We're seeing reports that influenza and COVID transmission in the community is increasing , while respiratory syncytial virus remains at high levels,"
stated Mills . Vaccination is recommended for individuals aged six months and older , with specific emphasis on children under five years , pregnant women , First Nations people , individuals over 65 years old , and those with underlying health conditions such as heart disease , chronic lung conditions , kidney and liver disease , and diabetes.

In addition to the flu vaccine , COVID-19 vaccination is also essential for individuals aged 65 and older . Mills recommended receiving a free COVID-19 vaccine at least every 12 months for those in this age group , with a more frequent six - month interval for individuals over 75 years old . Respiratory syncytial virus ( RSV ) poses a risk for older adults , leading to severe complications . An RSV vaccine called Arexvy is available for individuals aged 60 and above who are at higher risk of developing serious RSV - related issues.

To learn more about vaccinations and their associated costs , seniors are encouraged to consult with their doctors or pharmacists . Mills also highlighted the importance of adopting healthy habits like regular hand washing , covering coughs and sneezes , and staying home when feeling unwell to reduce the spread of illnesses . MPHN recommends booking vaccination appointments with healthcare providers , local pharmacies , or Aboriginal Medical Services ( AMS ) to ensure protection against respiratory illnesses during flu season.
