Consumer Reports recently conducted tests on various mosquito repellents to determine their effectiveness in keeping the bugs away. Volunteers participated in lab experiments where repellents were applied to their arms and then exposed to disease-free mosquitoes. The research team found that repellents containing DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or picaridin were the most effective in repelling mosquitoes. The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) also confirmed that these ingredients provide great protection against mosquitoes. The concentration of these active ingredients, such as 15% to 30% DEET, and 10% to 20% picaridin, played a crucial role in the effectiveness of the repellents.

Clothing treated with permethrin is also recommended as an effective mosquito repellent. Other products like citronella candles, bracelets, bug zappers, and sonic devices have not been scientifically validated and may not be as effective in repelling mosquitoes.
To prevent mosquito infestations around homes, experts recommend eliminating stagnant water sources where mosquitoes lay their eggs. Cleaning out gutters and emptying containers that collect water can help reduce mosquito populations. As climate change leads to warmer and wetter environments, the use of insect repellents becomes increasingly important in protecting against mosquito-borne diseases. Incorporating repellents into daily routines, especially in mosquito-prone areas, is essential for effective protection against these pesky insects.
