The monsoon season has arrived in Mumbai, bringing with it a rise in viral flu cases, particularly dengue and swine flu. Healthcare professionals are raising concerns about the growing number of patients presenting symptoms such as high-grade fever and severe throat pain. Dr. Neeraj Tulara, an Infectious Disease specialist at Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital, reported approximately 100 cases related to dengue and swine flu in the past week. He emphasized the importance of taking necessary precautions to prevent the spread of these seasonal infections. The changing temperature and increased humidity during the monsoon provide an ideal environment for viruses to multiply rapidly.
Dr. Girish Rajadhyaksha, head of medicine at Nair Hospital, highlighted that recovery from flu typically takes between 3-5 days, with the maximum recovery time being seven days. He advised individuals to seek medical attention if the fever exceeds 101 degrees and recommended preventive measures such as wearing masks, staying hydrated, and following a balanced diet. Dr. Manjusha Agarwal, a senior consultant in Internal Medicine at Gleneagles Hospital, stressed the importance of early treatment for senior citizens, urging them to seek medical help at the first sign of flu symptoms.
The rainy season in Mumbai has seen a significant increase in flu activity, with a surge in flu cases reported in the city. Besides flu, hospitals are also witnessing a rise in outpatient visits for vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria. Dr. Divya Gopal from Sir HN Reliance Hospital and Research Centre highlighted that Influenza A is a contagious viral infection with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and fatigue. Patients with compromised immunity are at higher risk of developing complications like pneumonia, which may require hospitalization.
To protect oneself from influenza, regular hand washing, maintaining cleanliness in the surroundings, and consuming a nutritious diet are essential preventive measures. Annual influenza immunization is particularly important for individuals with weakened immunity. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, so it is recommended to consult a physician if symptoms appear to ensure proper monitoring and management of any complications.
