Gambling Trends Among Young Adults in the Netherlands

Six out of ten young adults in the Netherlands are expected to engage in sports gambling activities this summer. A recent study conducted by research agency Ruigrok revealed that 30 percent of young adults aged 18 to 24 are likely to gamble on sports matches in the upcoming months, with an additional 32 percent considering the possibility. This trend is particularly prevalent among men in this age group.

Moreover, the research highlighted that young adults in the Netherlands are more inclined to gamble online compared to other age demographics, with sports betting being a popular choice. Despite betting lower amounts than older players, young gamblers still lose an average of over 600 euros annually. The study also emphasized that nearly all participants were cognizant of the potential negative outcomes associated with sports gambling, with 44 percent admitting to betting more than they could afford in the past.

Concerns and Warnings Against Excessive Gambling

Tony van Rooij, an expert from the Trimbos Institute, expressed concerns over the normalization of online gambling among young people in the Netherlands since its legalization in 2021. He highlighted the inherent risks of relying on knowledge and skill to predict sports outcomes, emphasizing that gambling ultimately hinges on luck and chance. Van Rooij warned about the dangers of long-term and persistent gambling, which can lead to severe consequences for both the individual and others involved.

In response to these alarming trends, Loket Kansspel launched a campaign aimed at educating young adults about the risks associated with online gambling. The "Dont play games with your money" campaign seeks to raise awareness about the pitfalls of engaging in excessive or irresponsible gambling behavior.

Impact of the UEFA Euro 2024 Tournament

The ongoing UEFA Euro 2024 tournament has emerged as a key driver for the surge in sports gambling activities among young adults in the Netherlands. The Dutch national team's victory over Poland in their opening game further fuelled interest in betting on soccer matches. With the tournament underway, more than half of young adults in the country are expected to participate in sports gambling, reflecting a growing trend among this demographic.

As the popularity of online gambling continues to rise, it is imperative to address the potential consequences of excessive betting and promote responsible gambling practices among young adults. By raising awareness and providing support for those at risk of developing gambling problems, stakeholders can mitigate the negative impact of gambling on individuals and society as a whole.
