White Castle, a popular fast-food chain with locations in St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Merrillville Indiana, has hopped on the artificial intelligence bandwagon by introducing voice AI drive-thrus. Julia, the AI voice assistant at these locations, aims to streamline the ordering process by utilizing SoundHound AI services. This move follows a trend seen in other major chains like Taco Bell and McDonald's, which have also experimented with voice-recognition AI technology.

Jamie Richardson, White Castle's VP of marketing and publication relations, confirmed the successful implementation of SoundHound's AI voice-recognition services at a restaurant in Merrillville in 2022. Since then, the technology has been rolled out to 15 restaurants, with plans to expand to over 100 drive-thru lanes by the end of 2024. Richardson emphasized that the primary goal of using AI is to reduce stress for staff handling multiple tasks while providing customers with a more relaxed and accurate ordering experience.

SoundHound, the company behind the AI technology, boasts about the system's accuracy, claiming to outperform human cashiers. Ben Bellettini, SoundHound's senior vice president of restaurant sales, mentioned that over 90% of orders processed by AI do not require human intervention. Despite the advancements in AI technology, challenges still persist in the adoption of voice AI drive-thrus. Reports from restaurant-tech company Presto Automations indicated that a significant percentage of AI orders needed human assistance, highlighting the need for further improvements. McDonald's faced backlash over issues with its voice AI-powered drive-thrus, leading to the termination of its partnership with IBM. Critics also raise concerns about the potential job displacements resulting from increased AI integration in the restaurant industry.
