The Louisiana Department of Health is urging the public to take precautions against mosquitos that could contain the West Nile virus. According to Jeremy Melancon from the Mosquito Squad, the first case of West Nile was reported in Louisiana in 2001. Symptoms of the West Nile virus include fever, muscle aches, rash, nausea, and vomiting. Melancon emphasized the importance of cutting grass to control mosquitoes, as standing water is where they breed. He also advised against leaving debris in yards, as they can attract mosquitoes.

Prevention tips for West Nile virus include using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants. Melancon highlighted the significant number of cases reported in the United States annually, with an average of 2500 cases, 10% of which are fatal. Ensuring proper mosquito control is crucial in preventing the spread of the virus.
