Bat populations in Colorado may be facing a significant decline due to the deadly fungus causing white-nose syndrome, which could lead to ecological disruptions across the state. The recent discovery of two infected bats in Boulder County and additional cases in Larimer County have raised concerns about the spread of the disease.

White-nose syndrome is caused by a fungus called Pseudogymnoascus destructans, which affects bats during hibernation, leading to early awakening, nutrient loss, and other metabolic imbalances. The disease has already devastated bat populations in other states, and Colorado's diverse group of Myotis bats, including the Little brown bat and Tricolored bats, are at risk.

Researchers are working to understand how white-nose syndrome could impact bat populations in Colorado by analyzing genetic samples and predicting the spread of the disease. The lack of information on population structure and hibernation behaviors of Western Myotis species presents a challenge, but efforts are being made to develop conservation strategies.

While a vaccine against white-nose syndrome shows promise, challenges remain in administering it to wild bat populations. Some preliminary studies suggest that Eastern little brown bats may be developing resistance to the fungus, offering hope for their survival. However, the rebuilding of bat populations will be a slow process due to low reproduction rates and other threats.

In collaboration with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, researchers are conducting genetic analyses to better understand the potential impact of white-nose syndrome on Colorado bat populations and identify areas for protection efforts. By studying genetic data and disease transmission patterns, scientists hope to mitigate the spread of the fungus and protect vulnerable bat species in the region.
