The 77th edition of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival is set to take place from May 14 to May 25. This year, among the array of outstanding films to be showcased, a special treat awaits as a restored Hong Kong classic will be part of the lineup. The iconic 1984 romantic comedy 'Shanghai Blues,' directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark, is marking its 40th anniversary and has undergone a meticulous 4K restoration for its screening at Cannes.
Set against the backdrop of 1930s Shanghai, 'Shanghai Blues' narrates the tale of Shu, portrayed by Sylvia Chang, and Tung, played by Kenny Bee, who find themselves seeking shelter under a bridge during a bombing. Despite their limited visibility, a bond forms between them, leading them to promise a reunion post the war. A twist of fate brings them together once more ten years later, with neither realizing their earlier encounter.
Helmed by Tsui Hark and producer Nansun Shi, the restoration project was closely overseen by the duo along with Film Workshop and LImmagine Ritrovata. The film's soundtrack was remixed by One Cool Sound, and the new version features authentic dialect dubbing in Cantonese, Mandarin, and Shanghainese for added realism. Enhanced English subtitles aim to provide a deeper understanding for international viewers.
'Shanghai Blues' previously graced the screens of the 1986 International Film Festival in Rotterdam and the Berlinale in 1987. Its inclusion in the Cannes Film Festival now pays homage to the golden era of Hong Kong cinema. Anticipation looms for a homecoming screening in Hong Kong following its Cannes premiere.
