The Oakland Athletics had a chance to sweep the Los Angeles Angels in the series finale , but unfortunately , they blew a late lead and ended up losing 8 - 5 . The pitching matchup featured As rookie Joey Estes against veteran Carson Fulmer . Both teams showed strong defense early on , including some impressive plays by the As players.

In the bottom of the third inning , the Athletics got on the scoreboard first with Lawrence Butler , JJ Bleday , and Brent Rooker hitting doubles to bring in runs . Miguel Andujar later added a solo home run for the As in the fourth inning , giving them a lead once again .
