Rugby Sevens - An Olympic Sport

Rugby sevens is a current Olympic sport , making its first appearance in the Olympic Games Rio 2016 . Sevens is played with 7 players on each side of the ball who compete for 14 - minutes in tournaments with up to three matches per competition day . The Championship track typically awards the top finishes of the tournament including first , second , and third place . The Challenge track consists of consolation rounds . Sarah Levy 's decision to try out for Northeastern 's women 's rugby club as a freshman may pay off with an Olympic medal in Paris.

The USA Women 's Rugby Sevens Team is set to compete in the 69,000 - seat Stade de France on July 28 . Levy , who was born in rugby - mad South Africa , where a family member , Louis Babrow , was a lifelong opponent of apartheid , will be among the 13 Americans heading to Paris to compete in the women 's rugby sevens event at the Olympic Games . The USA team is currently ranked No . 4 in the women 's rugby sevens world rankings.

Sarah Levy had n't played any rugby before she came to Northeastern University a decade ago . By weeks end , Levy was being invited to compete for Northeastern in a game , even though she did n't know many of the rules . Her six - year association with USA Rugby resulted in consistent improvement , culminating in her selection to the Olympic team . Levy believes in her team 's potential to achieve a podium finish at the Paris Olympics . It was only recently that making the Olympic team became a realistic goal for Levy , who initially succumbed to peer pressure to join the rugby club at Northeastern.
