Google Launches Gemini Program for Student Innovation in AI Education

Google is dedicated to assisting student learning in an AI-driven world, introducing the Gemini program to provide support and guidance to teenagers. Last year, Google launched a responsible Gemini experience for teens, ensuring safety and privacy by consulting child safety experts and implementing strict content policies. To further enhance safety measures, Google partnered with learning science specialists and youth advisory panels to test the technology. Additionally, extra data protection has been added for educational users at no extra cost, guaranteeing that data from chats will not be used to improve AI models.

In the upcoming months, Gemini will be accessible to teen students using Google Workspace for Education accounts in over 100 countries worldwide. Schools will have control over activating Gemini as an Additional Service in the Admin console, ensuring that the technology is used responsibly. This initiative will be free of charge for all educational institutions, providing a unique and beneficial learning experience for students.

At the recent ISTE 2024 education conference, Google unveiled new features like Read Aloud in Reading Mode and enhanced Gemini capabilities for schools. The Read Along feature in Google Classroom will help younger students practice reading skills with AI-powered real-time support. Educators can assign reading activities based on various criteria and monitor students' progress in terms of accuracy, speed, and comprehension.

Google also announced that Meet and Assignments will be available in third-party learning management systems, expanding accessibility for educators and students. Additionally, the Chrome browser's Reading Mode will introduce a Read Aloud feature, allowing users to control playback speed and choose from multiple voices. The Files app on ChromeOS will include augmented image labels to assist users with screen readers, enhancing accessibility for all.
